PUMPKIN'S INTO COACHES
When I stopped by today to drop off a batch of New Century
Collectors for the November Acorn’s Antiques show, the place was a
madhouse. Scores of dealers hauling
tables, display cases and merchandise into the building to prepare for tomorrows show opening. It was frenzy. I took a second to reflect on how lucky I was
to be there, most collectors never get a peek at the business end of an
antiques show. And it is something to see.
Set up day at the antiques show! I couldn’t help but smile, it doesn’t get any
more exciting than this. Aisles are
stuffed and cluttered with dusty old furnishings, and the aroma of polish wafts
through the air offering an irresistible come on. Elsewhere, tables stacked high with
nondescript tubs, crates, and chaos belie the treasures secreted within,
and anxious dealers do their fairy
godmother best to turn the pumpkin into an elegant coach.
If you hang around long enough, it’s like watching a
caterpillar become a butterfly. Disorganization giving way to order, with row
after row of miniature antique shops emerging
from the confusion, primped and preened, wearing their Sunday best, and
ready for business. When collectors pour
through the doors the tomorrow morning, there won’t be a sign of set up day
carnage. Now the real fun begins.
