We thought you might like to take an early peek at the new column
that Cathie Cox will be doing for the New Century Collector. We thought
the columns title "Sincerely Vintage", described Cathie to a tee. The below column appears in the April issue of the NEW CENTURY COLLECTOR.
SINCERELY VINTAGE
by Cathie Cox
"Wide eyed wonder"
As
a pre-teen in the 1960’s, my heart would race with anticipation as Mom and I
would drive the 10 or so miles from our suburban Detroit home to Northland, the
shopping center with the department store. What usually followed was
a day filled with wide-eyed browsing and indulgent purchasing. Once home, I
would remove each item from its bag – to caress it. . . discover it. . . get to
“know” it, And then, feeling quite
satisfied, I would revel in the delicious joy of the shopping trip. . . and
start to wonder when we would go again!
Some
45 years later, my heart no longer jumps out of my chest at the thought of a
day at the mall. Give me a flea market or vintage sale, however, and you’d
think it was free day in the candy store for five-year-olds. Waiting for a sale
is painful. A month ‘til the next flea market? Aargh! Is it worth the
wait? Of course it is. I walk through the entrance with wide-eyed wonder into
my candy store.
So
what is it, then, about a flea market? Is it because the items have a
past? A story to tell? Is it the excitement of the event, the variety to choose
from, the beauty of the displays? Is it the thrill of the hunt? Answer - all of
the above. And for me, the treasures at a flea market have character. I
love that they have lived another life, and the rubbed edges, the rust, the
stains – all show that. Like me, they are imperfect, a little rough around the
edges, yet sincere. And oh my, there are so many choices. . . . Should I
get the tweed suitcase, or the 50’s tablecloths? The chippy dresser? The jar of
buttons? Hmm, definitely time for indulgent purchasing.
I
load my treasures into the car, delighted with what I’ve found. It’s been
another delicious day at the flea market. . . I wonder when I can go again?
