TAKE AN EARLY PEEK.... SINCERELY VINTAGE COLUMN JUNE 2013

WE THOUGHT THOSE WHO FOLLOW
CATHIE COX'S COLUMN IN THE NEW CENTURY COLLECTOR MIGHT WANT TO TAKE AN EARLY PEEK, SO.................. HERRRE'S CATHIE!

SINCERELY VINTAGE
While running flea markets for the past few years a concern I’ve often heard from new dealers is, “How do I price my items?” They are often stymied by this – and rightly so – since the price of an item can make or break the sale. What’s a dealer to do? If you price too high you’ll lose sales. But if you price too low you’ll lose profits. So – just how do you figure out if “the price is right?”. Remember, an item is only worth what the customer is willing to pay. So even when the collectibles guide says that my tomato juice pitcher is worth $25, if my customers look at the price tag and walk away, it’s not worth that much. Here’s how I decide what prices I can realistically get for my items:

 1. My favorite source for pricing is eBay’s“ sold listings.” This will show you what people actually paid for items, not just the asking price. When I looked up my tomato juice pitcher, out of about 150 completed listings, only 10 had sold and most of those were between $3 and $10. This tells me that the pitchers are not a hot item and if I price it at “book value” I’ll be sitting on it for quite a while.

2. Scour flea markets and antique stores looking for items that you need prices for. Keep in mind, though, that every dealer has their own ideas about what the “right" price is.

3. Talk to other dealers or collectors who know the category you need a price in.  They know the local market.

4. Be very careful about pricing your items based on TV shows such as Antiques Roadshow or American Pickers. These shows are entertainment, and not practical for use as pricing guides.

5. Don’t overspend when buying merchandise, it will come back to haunt you when pricing. I recently spent too much on an awesome industrial office chair because I was drawn to its interesting design elements. Customers passed it over for two days at a recent show after looking at the price tag. So now I have to choose – take a loss or find a spot in my house for it. . . .

6. Don’t price your items based on sentiment. Have you ever been to a sale where you ask a price and the seller tells you the story about how his grandma used that bowl to make buttermilk biscuits in?  If it's sentimental, keep it don't sell it.

7. Where are you going to sell your item? People will often pay different amounts at antiques shows than flea markets. Remember to leave a little “wiggle” room in your prices since many customers like to haggle.

8. Lastly, put a price tag on everything! My pet peeve is having to ask the dealer the price of an item I’m interested in. I don’t like asking prices – if items aren’t priced I tend to move on to the next booth. Don’t lose sales because your items aren’t priced!

Have fun while pricing your vintage treasures. You’re pricing them to go to a sale, after all, and isn’t that the reason we collect in the first place.
                                                                                            Sincerely, Cathie

CATHIE COX........ SINCERELY VINTAGE

We thought you might like to take an early peek at the new column
that Cathie Cox will be doing for the New Century Collector.  We thought
the columns title "Sincerely Vintage", described Cathie to a tee.  The below column appears in the April issue of the NEW CENTURY COLLECTOR.

SINCERELY VINTAGE
by Cathie Cox
"Wide eyed wonder"

As a pre-teen in the 1960’s, my heart would race with anticipation as Mom and I would drive the 10 or so miles from our suburban Detroit home to Northland, the shopping center with the department store. What usually followed was a day filled with wide-eyed browsing and  indulgent  purchasing.  Once home,  I would  remove  each  item   from its bag – to caress it. . . discover it. . . get to “know” it,  And then, feeling quite satisfied, I would revel in the delicious joy of the shopping trip. . . and start to wonder when we would go again!
Some 45 years later, my heart no longer jumps out of my chest at the thought of a day at the mall. Give me a flea market or vintage sale, however, and you’d think it was free day in the candy store for five-year-olds. Waiting for a sale is painful. A month ‘til the next flea market? Aargh! Is it worth the wait? Of course it is. I walk through the entrance with wide-eyed wonder into my candy store.
So what is it, then, about a flea market? Is it because the items have a past? A story to tell? Is it the excitement of the event, the variety to choose from, the beauty of the displays? Is it the thrill of the hunt? Answer - all of the above. And for me, the treasures at a flea market have character. I love that they have lived another life, and the rubbed edges, the rust, the stains – all show that. Like me, they are imperfect, a little rough around the edges, yet sincere. And oh my, there are so many choices. . . . Should I get the tweed suitcase, or the 50’s tablecloths? The chippy dresser? The jar of buttons? Hmm, definitely time for indulgent purchasing.
I load my treasures into the car, delighted with what I’ve found. It’s been another delicious day at the flea market. . . I wonder when I can go again?

The Salt Lake Vintage Flea Market is the place to be this weekend.

ALL DRESSED UP
WITH NOWHERE TO GO?

WHY NOT CHECK OUT THE
NEW SLC VINTAGE FLEA MARKET!

The new Salt Lake Vintage Flea Market & Auction opened last weekend, so we decided to drop by and take a peek.  We were not disappointed.  Although there was still some unfilled space in the  permanent booth area, there were plenty of  vintage goodies to grab our attention. I of course headed strait to the old records, as Lyn went her own way, methodically checking booth after booth.

As we looked around, our thoughts kept  circling back to the specialty hot dog stand we noticed by the front door. It was inevitable, Lyn bought a couple of chotsky’s, I grabbed a couple of vintage record  albums, and we both grabbed a dog, and a clear impression that this market is going to be a hit.

If your looking for a great way to fill up a little of your weekend time, jump in the jalopy and get down to the new Vintage Flea Market.

The Salt Lake Vintage Flea Market, owned by Wanship antiques   Dealers Will Dator & Emy Maloutas, is located at 550 W. 1300 So, and open every Saturday from 8 to 4, and Sundays from 9 to 4.

DOUBLE THE PLEASURE, DOUBLE THE FUN....

TWO ANTIQUE SHOWS IN FEBRUARY
WAS JUST THE TICKET!

Forget that Batman & Robin stuff; February brought Utah antiquer's the real “dynamic duo”.  If you’re the kind of guy who likes his shoes well broken in and comfortable, you probably headed to Ogden for “Acorns”, one of Utah's oldest & most respected antiques events.  If you prefer the smell of fresh leather, and worship that shine on a new pair of kicks, you were waiting in line at the Salt Lake Masonic Temple for the first peek at a new antiquing tradition.  If you were smart you didn’t miss either.

As always, Acorns Weber County Fairgrounds venue was filled with a cadre of local and out of state dealers offering an eager crowd antique furnishings, collectibles, decoratives and the trendiest junque. And the place was hopping. It was elbow to elbow in most of the booths, and from the looks of it, dealers brought just what the antiques hungry crowd were after, as few shoppers were not toting an a armful of packages.

It was cold and snowy outside as antiques & vintage dealers waited with fingers crossed to find out if collectors would brave the elements to check out the new Historic Salt Lake Antiques show.  No worry, when the doors opened, an excited crowd poured in, and kept on coming throughout the weekend. If anyone  wondered if Salt Lake City was hungry for an antiques show; they were  ravenous.  The show stopper was the venue itself, an Aztec themed ballroom in the historic Salt Lake Masonic Temple.  A series of antiques & vintage shows are on  the drawing board,  hopefully the show will become permanent.

GIVE ME A PLACE TO SHOP WHERE IT'S WARM....... I'M FLEAZIN

I've missed the year round antiques and collectible flea markets that we used to frequent when we had our antiques shop.  In the 1980's & 90's, the "swap meet" at the redwood drive-in was almost like a hundred mini tag sales, and always a good place to unearth a few treasures to put on our shelves Monday morning. But these days it has evolved into more of an ethnic market than a swap meet.  The indoor/outdoor weekend market at the Salt Lake Fairgrounds went through several incarnations, never becoming much more than a second-hand sale, and mercifully closed a short time ago. So the Salt Lake Valley has been pretty much devoid of anyplace to do a little weekend junking.

But things are looking up, and it looks like we've got a new place to go to church on Sunday mornings.  This past weekend, Wanship antique dealers Will Dator & Emy Maloutas opened The Salt Lake Vintage Flea Market & Auction.  A large, indoor, year round flea market, with permanent collectibles booths and lots of space for drop-in dealers to set up.
THE NEW SALT LAKE INDOOR FLEA MARKET
IS LOCATED AT 550 W. 1300 SO.

OWNER EMY MALOUTAS

Lyn & I dropped by Sunday, to give the place the once over, and we know where were we'll be spending our free time on the weekends from now on.  From the hotdog stand out front, to the live music in the back, the flea market offers a great place to shop for antiques & vintage merchandise.

You can walk in for a buck, and the place is full of antiques, collectibles, art, vintage & retro goodies.  While Lyn looked around, I headed straight to the Vinyl section, and picked up a couple of new vintage rock & roll albums.  There seemed to be a little something for everybody.

THE SALT LAKE VINTAGE FLEA MARKET
