ACORN'S ANTIQUES, THE ONLY PLACE TO BE THIS WEEKEND!

PUMPKIN'S INTO COACHES
When I stopped by today to drop off a batch of New Century Collectors for the November Acorn’s Antiques show, the place was a madhouse.  Scores of dealers hauling tables, display cases and merchandise into the building to prepare for tomorrows show opening.  It was frenzy.  I took a second to reflect on how lucky I was to be there, most collectors never get a peek at the business end of an antiques show.  And it is something to see.
Set up day at the antiques show!  I couldn’t help but smile, it doesn’t get any more exciting than this.  Aisles are stuffed and cluttered with dusty old furnishings, and the aroma of polish wafts through the air offering an irresistible come on.  Elsewhere, tables stacked high with nondescript tubs, crates, and chaos belie the treasures secreted within, and anxious dealers do their fairy godmother best to turn the pumpkin into an elegant coach.

If you hang around long enough, it’s like watching a caterpillar become a butterfly. Disorganization giving way to order, with row after row of miniature antique shops emerging  from the confusion, primped and preened, wearing their Sunday best, and ready for business.  When collectors pour through the doors the tomorrow morning, there won’t be a sign of set up day carnage.  Now the real fun begins.

Acorns is Utah's biggest, most diverse antiques show. You don't want to miss this one
If you look hard enough, you're sure to find something to take home.

Oops..... NO BIG MISTAKES, JUST BITS AND PIECES

For almost 50 years, I have relied on my wife Lyn, to keep my feet out of the quicksand. She makes copious lists,  color coded files,  event calendar entries, and turns me around when I'm about ready to stumble off a cliff.  Inversely, I walk about with all of life's minutia swarming around my head like a cloud of brine flies at the lake.  As you might guess, Lyn proofs & makes corrections to the NEW CENTURY COLLECTOR the final morning before I send each edition off to the printer.

REMEMBER, YOU CAN'T JUST SCAN IT... YOU HAVE TO READ IT! These were Lyn's parting words as she headed out the door for an unscheduled early meeting, leaving me, more neophyte than old hand, to take care of proofing the November edition.

Well, my apologies to the folks down at BITS & PIECES, Salt Lakes newest antiques and vintage shop. I scanned.   We had errors regarding address, and hours in this months COLLECTOR.  The shop is really located at 1528 So. Major Street (35 E.) in Salt Lake.  And, you can still make their grand opening weekend Tomorrow & Saturday (November 4-5) from 10:00 until 6:00 o'clock. I stopped in this morning, and know you'll like it.

PLEASE FORGIVE ANY ERRORS IN THE ABOVE TEXT...
LYN IS STILL AT WORK.

DON'T MISS THE NEW FLEA MARKET TOMORROW MORNING!

Cold weather is on the way, and no one really wants to slosh around the city trying to fill their plate with the meager offerings of the few yard sales that pop up on Saturdays. And, the usual one or two indoor special events just aren't enough to feed on.  The one thing that has been missing from the Salt Lake collecting scene is a good indoor flea market.  Well, that ends tomorrow.  Smart collectors will be taking their meal at the new SALT LAKE CITY * FLEA MARKET AND SWAP MEET.

The New flea market at the Utah Fairpark is brought to us by partners Kate Wheaton & Michael Sanders, who have been feeding us all summer at the outdoor Salt Lake Urban Flea market.  The  market will feature many of the same great vendors, along with a few new tricks. The first few markets will be Oct.29, Nov.19, Dec.17, Jan.28, Feb.25, & Mar.25. The market tomorrow will include the popular Salt Lake ROCK & ROLL SWAP MEET, featuring vintage vinyl and rock memorabilia. How's that for dessert!  See you there.

COWBOY MARKET & FLEA! This one will have to be come as you are

Okay, I admit it.  I'm a greenhorn. At best a tenderfoot, at worst, a one time space cowboy.  But the truth is that nothing makes me more excited about the notion of spending a day dressed to the nines, in full cowboy regalia, than a trip down to Pleasant Grove to the annual COWBOY MARKET AND FLEA.  Unfortunately, as I assess my entire cowhand wardrobe, it seems to come down to a pair of roughout cowboy boots that Lyn bought me back in about 1972.  It didn't occur to me at the time, but I was probably supposed to get her a schoolmarm getup.

Anyway, cowboy hat or not, I'm headin' down to the COWBOY MARKET on Saturday.  You ought to go down too.  For my money, it's the most charming of the many local vintage markets, and if you get there a little early,  for a few bucks you can grab some grub at the chuck wagon.  Stop by and say hello.  I guess I'll be the guy in the button down shirt and khakis

HOMAGE TO THE "HIPPIE DIPPY WEATHER.... MAN".

You know, sometimes I wonder if I'm on a train that may have passed too many stations. As I look out the window, most of the stops along the way seem to be bustling with people who still have that new car smell about them. Fresh faces and fresh trends. Busy slapping a clean coat of paint on a business that admittedly owns its share of chips and scratches.  But what the heck... who says I'm not a pretty hip guy.  I'm just a little longer in the hip than most of them.  But I can still picture myself at 18, standing in a garage, brush in hand, painting up  A pile of old furniture collected from my grandparents basements and attics, to be used in furnishing our 1st apartment.  Of course then, we called it "antiquing", but it was really just a decades old expression of the current "paint and distress" trend.  So don't laugh when you see me eyeballing an old copy of " The Hippies Handbook",  in 50 years, you may find yourself at a flea market  sniffing around a stack of tattered  "Vintage Style" magazines. Anyway, if you'd like, we'd love you to take a look at the latest issue of the New Century Collector.  This months cover is dedicated to what I think of as hip.  But you'll find a little something for every collector inside.  Just give the picture below a little click.  We hope you like it.

She's absolutely giddy.  This is the first time she's seen records actually leave the house.  I think she's been milling around the boxes gleefully saying goodbye to each of them.  Come by the swap meet tomorrow and buy a record.... she may even do a little jig.  See you there.

TWO OUT OF THREE AIN'T BAD

I USUALLY DROP OFF A STACK OF COLLECTORS AT A SHOP, ANTIQUE SHOW OR EVENT,  AND THAT'S  THE LAST I SEE OF THEM. I FIGURE PEOPLE READ THEM, BECAUSE THEY'RE USUSALLY GONE WHEN I DROP OFF THE NEXT BATCH. HOWEVER, I DON'T REALLY GET MUCH PERSONAL EVIDENCE OF THAT.

BUT, I WAS GOING THROUGH SOME PICTURES WE TOOK DOWN IN SPRING CITY DURING THEIR HERITAGE DAY CELEBRATION A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO,  WHEN I RAN ACROSS THIS PHOTO THAT LYN HAD APPARENTLY TAKEN WHILE I WAS OFF GABBING WITH SOMEONE.
WHAT I CAN'T FIGURE OUT, IS WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THAT LADY IN THE MIDDLE.  I HAD ALWAY THOUGHT THAT EVERYBODY GRABBED ONE.  WELL,
I GUESS 2 OUT OF 3 AINT BAD.

DON'T JUST SIT THERE.... GET YOURSELF A CHAIR

CHAIRS! CHAIRS! CHAIRS!
EuroTreasures.... Salt Lake City,
10's of thousands of square feet of
antiquing bliss!

You don't approach a trip to EuroTreasures the way you would an ordinary antiquing excursion. It's just not a casual event.  One prepares himself for
the experience.  If you think of the usual antiques shop as a church, EuroTreasures is a Cathedral.

EuroTreasues is huge. You could easily fit 8 or 10 typical antiques malls
into this cavernous building siding 600 south as you enter the city. And, due to owner and antiques guru Scott Evans penchant for "higher and deeper", it can be a bit daunting to take it all in.  There are 1000's of antique sideboards, dressers, wardrobes and the like, arranged as if dropped from the heavens into haphazard piles and stacks, accessed by a maze of small alleys and passages.  At the very least, to explore this remarkable shop, you need to set aside a bit of time, and
you might want to take a bottle of water, maybe pack a lunch, or at least
grab a little granola or an energy bar.

If you have never been to EuroTreasures you've missed what is perhaps
Utah's most fascinating antiquing experiences.  You'll find a $10,000 Hunt
Cabinet standing in the shade of a stack of $200 rustic commodes and
$20.00 antique chairs. African art & objects mingle with Utah's best selection
of arts and crafts furnishing, and the place bulges with "as is" pieces, budget
priced and perfect for restoration, reimagined or up-cycled projects. All watched over by a full body mount African lion and a menagerie of lesser creatures.

AND AS I MENTIONED ABOVE
CHAIRS! CHAIRS! CHAIRS!

They must be breeding. They seem to be roaming the shop with no natural predators.  Everywhere you look you find a chair peeking at you from behind
a bookcase or dresser, or lined up like a firing squad. Thousands have been herded to the back of the building and stacked in a pile as high as the rafters.  Sets and single chairs, Victorian to art deco, interlocked in a pile
as intricate as a Chinese puzzle box.

THROUGHOUT JUNE, EVERY CHAIR AT EUROTREASURES IS ON SALE

For as little as $10, you can buy an antique chair, that with a bit
of elbow grease and a little wax will ad a touch of charm to any room, or can be easily updated with a little chalk paint for vintage lovers.

THIS SALE PROMISES TO BE A MECCA FOR
BOTH COLLECTORS AND DEALERS. STOP BY AND DIG OUT A TREASURE
